Part 3 of 4 - The Cortex: The Heart of Your Hair

Hey, sweetheart,

We’ve already looked at the protective outer layer (the cuticle). But today we’re going a layer deeper. We’re going to take a look at what holds your hair together on the inside: the cortex. It makes up about 80 to 90% of your hair. Without it, your hair would be nothing more than a lifeless shell!

1. The Power Plant Within

If the cuticle is the armor, then the cortex is the knight inside. It consists of countless bundles of keratin fibers twisted together—much like the fibers in an extremely strong steel cable. This layer is responsible for the hair’s tensile strength and elasticity. When wet, healthy hair can be stretched up to 30% without breaking!

2. Why keratin alone isn't enough

Everywhere we read “with keratin for strong hair.” But be careful: too much protein without the right balance of moisture makes hair brittle. Imagine the cortex as a brick house. The keratin is the bricks. But what good are the bricks without the mortar? The “mortar” in hair consists of lipids and moisture. Without this cohesion, the house crumbles—no matter how many bricks (proteins) you slap on from the outside.

3. This is where your color lives

Have you ever wondered exactly where your blonde, brown, or red hair “lives”? The cortex is where the melanin—your color pigments—is located. When we chemically dye or bleach hair, the chemicals have to forcefully break down the cuticle to reach the cortex and alter the pigments there. That’s why chemically treated hair often loses its internal strength.

4. Organic Skincare: Gentle Nourishment for the Heart

Conventional skincare often uses harsh chemicals to force active ingredients into the epidermis. Organic cosmetics harness the power of nature:

- Plant-based proteins: (e.g., from wheat or peas) are smaller and can penetrate the fiber layer more easily.

- Natural lipids: They replace the missing "binder" without weighing the hair down with plastic.

- Protection of the bridges: We take care not to damage the internal sulfur bridges with aggressive pH levels.

My pro tip: If your hair feels “stiff” or straw-like after a protein treatment, it’s lacking moisture! After using a protein-rich treatment, always follow up with a conditioner (e.g., The Shiny One) or a treatment (The Glowy One) based on aloe vera or plant-based oils to restore elasticity to the cortex. Protein for structure, moisture for softness—that’s the magic duo!

Are you ready to strengthen your hair from the inside out? Let’s figure out together what your “hair’s heart” really needs right now!
