Part 2 of 4 - The Scaly Layer: Your Protective Shield
Hey, sweetheart,
Have you ever wondered why your hair sometimes looks wonderfully shiny after washing, but on other days just looks dull and frizzy? The secret lies in the outermost layer of your hair. Today, we’re going to take a look at how your personal protective shield works!
1. Armor made of roof tiles
Imagine the outer layer of your hair (the cuticle) as the shingles on a roof or as a pinecone. Up to ten layers of these tiny, transparent scales lie on top of one another, protecting the delicate inner core (the cortex) of your hair.
2. Gloss vs. Matte: How Does It Work?
The secret to shiny hair is basically pure physics! When the "scales" lie close together and lie flat, they create a mirror-smooth surface. Light hits the hair and is perfectly reflected—your hair shines.
But when the cuticle layer is roughened and the scales are standing on end, light is scattered in all directions. The hair looks "straw-like," dull, and loses its shine. Plus, with the scales open, valuable moisture can escape from the inside: hello, frizz and hair breakage!
3. The Enemies of Your Shield
Why do these obstacles even arise? They’re often things from our everyday lives:
- Heat:Water that's too hot when washing your hair or styling tools without heat protection can literally split the cuticles.
- Friction: Roughly rubbing yourself dry with a towel. (It’s better to just gently squeeze the water out!)
- Harsh chemicals: Aggressive surfactants in conventional shampoos or overly harsh chemical treatments break down the protective barrier.
4. The Difference with Organic Cosmetics
When you use conventional products, a thick layer of silicone often coats the roughened hair. It may feel soft, but it’s really just a “plastic bandage.” The cuticle layer underneath remains damaged, and the hair is literally suffocating. The long-term benefit: In organic cosmetics, we work with nature, not against it. We use gentle cleansers and ingredients that respect the scalp’s natural acid mantle.
A slightly acidic pH level naturally helps the cuticle layer close on its own. Your hair becomes smooth and silky, and the shine is 100% natural!
My pro tip: Always finish washing your hair with a splash of cold water! The cold causes the cuticle layer to tighten up instantly, sealing in moisture and conditioning and giving your hair the ultimate natural shine boost.
Hugs 🫶🏻
All the best,
Isabella
